How an energy storage system helps you

Challenge A:
The grid connection is insufficient for shore power
Your existing grid connection is sized for base load and often can't handle the additional megawatts shore power requires. Upgrading means capacity assessments, permits, excavation, and a new transformer station – a process that can take years and cost millions. An energy storage system can be installed within months, and leasing means no large upfront capital.
The energy storage system covers the extra power required when a vessel connects to shore power.
This way, your grid connection is no longer an obstacle to offering shore power.
Challenge B:
Sufficient grid connection, but demand charges skyrocket.
Even if your grid connection can handle shore power, demand charges can multiply in the worst case. When a vessel connects to shore power, it requires several megawatts of power. Demand charges are often based on the month's highest peak. Offering shore power can lead to demand charges tens of thousands of euros higher than before.
When a vessel connects to shore power, part of the power comes from the energy storage system.
This reduces grid power peaks and you pay lower demand charges.

Optimized schedule – every day

The Cactos energy storage system works automatically in the background, ensuring your port always uses electricity in the most cost-effective way. This is handled by the Cactos Spine control software without any action required from you.

When electricity is cheap, the energy storage charges. Before a vessel arrives, Cactos anticipates the need and automatically begins discharging to support your shore power system. When no vessels are connected, it optimizes your port's electricity use in other ways: for example, by shifting consumption to the battery when the electricity price rises.

The energy storage also participates in ancillary service markets, generating additional revenue even when there are no other demands.

Modular energy storage for large-scale facilities

Nevado is a liquid-cooled energy storage system developed for large-scale projects. It is designed to operate reliably even under the most demanding conditions.

Available in three versions with a power output of over 2 MW and a capacity of over 4 MWh per unit. By combining multiple units, the system can be scaled up to 50 MWh.

2. Sizing and agreement
We design a solution that fits your needs together with you. You choose your own financing model – leasing or direct purchase – and always receive monitoring, maintenance and service.
3. Installation and setup
We install the energy storage system at your port and ensure a smooth commissioning process.
4. Operation
Once the project is complete, the energy storage system supports shore power needs and optimises the port's wider electricity use. Between vessel calls, the energy storage can participate in the ancillary services market and generate additional revenue.
