Cafe Carusel: a frontrunner in energy innovation

Cafe Carusel is a restaurant in Helsinki, where sustainable development has long been part of daily operations. Entrepreneur Ari Sarmanto has invested in energy solutions step by step: first solar panels, then switching from district heating to heat generated from sea water. The next step was battery storage. 

Restaurant operations create large consumption spikes

In a restaurant, electricity consumption is anything but steady. When the kitchen is running at full capacity, a band is playing in the dining room, and the air conditioning is on, all at once, a sudden consumption spike appears directly in demand charges. At the same time, solar panels may be producing more than the restaurant needs at that moment, and the surplus goes to waste.

The solution: two smart battery systems working around the clock

Two Cactos Steno battery storage units were installed outside at Cafe Carusel. The system charges when electricity is cheap or solar panels generate surplus, and discharges energy for own use when consumption is high or spot prices rise. Consumption peaks are cut automatically, without the entrepreneur needing to do anything.

Installation was fast and required no separate building permits. Financing was arranged through a leasing model, without a large upfront investment. 

The Cactos Spine software manages everything automatically, 24/7. Developed in Finland and fully managed by Cactos, the platform enables optimal operation of the energy storage system.
