It all began back in 2018. An eager group of energy and software experts deep in Northern Ostrobothnia had an idea. They called it NGSESS – New Generation Smart Energy Storage System. Unsurprisingly, the name didn’t stick.
It was Olli who was racking his brain and pulling his mustache trying to come up with something stickier that would capture the essence of what they were doing. He spent hours coming up with techy names all while the answer was staring at him right in front of him on the desk: a prickly cactus.
A cactus adapts to its environment, has a thick skin and is a master of storing water and nutrients. With a little Ancient Greek spin on the name, Cactos was born.
Instead of Texas, we set up our office in Helsinki. R&D and manufacturing remained in the idea’s birthplace, Muhos, until relocating to larger facilities in Kempele in the fall of 2024.
