What are electricity markets?
Electricity markets refer to the marketplaces and mechanisms through which electricity and electricity-related services are bought, sold and balanced. They encompass wholesale markets, where electricity is bought and sold, reserve markets operated by transmission system operators, where the frequency and balance of the electricity system are maintained, and local flexibility markets, where network operators procure flexibility for the needs of the transmission and distribution grid. Together, these markets ensure that electricity production and consumption remain in balance at every moment.
Which markets does a Cactos battery storage system participate in?
Cactos energy storage systems installed at consumption sites such as industrial properties can participate in reserve markets (in Finland FCR-N and FCR-D) operated by local transmission system operator. Grid-scale energy storage systems can participate in additional markets including Nord Pool intraday and day-ahead wholesale markets, and local flexibility markets.

What are the ancillary service markets?
The electricity grid must have an equal amount of generation and consumption at any given moment to maintain the grid frequency within the agreed 49.9-50.1 hertz range. Your local transmission system operator (TSO) operates ancillary service markets for real-time balancing of the national electricity system. In other words, generators, consumers, batteries, etc. participating in the ancillary service markets are continuously involved in the management of the frequency of the electrical grid.
It is difficult or impossible for an individual consumer or company to participate in the markets due to, among other things, the minimum bid size of the markets and various technical requirements. However, by leasing a Cactos energy storage system, you can participate in the ancillary service markets as part of a larger pool.
How much return can I expect from the ancillary service markets?
The return is determined on the reserve market, which is a marketplace operated by the local transmission system operator. Cactos' systems operate mainly on the hourly market, which trades for the next 24 hours.
The compensation depends on factors such as your Cactos energy storage system's size, participating markets and market prices, and the number of hours you offer reserve capacity. As an example, in Finland information on the prices realised can be found on the Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid's website.
How does the Cactos system participate in the ancillary service markets?
Cactos uses its proprietary backend system to aggregate Cactos energy reserves into a larger virtual energy reserve that meets market requirements in terms of both size and technical performance. Cactos manages reserve market trading and reporting on behalf of its customers. The distribution of the ancillary service market revenues between Cactos and the customer is agreed between the two parties.
How are the market revenues paid to the client?
Ancillary service market income is remitted to the client once a quarter, in accordance with the actual performance. The customer will be able to monitor the reserve market returns on their own equipment in real time through Cactos Spine, an application provided by Cactos.
Market revenues are paid out monthly at grid-scale battery storage sites.
Will the ancillary service markets still exist in the future?
The ancillary service markets are the answer to a technical problem for transmission system operators – how to keep the grid frequency between 49.9 and 50.1 hertz. This challenge will not disappear in the future, so ancillary services will certainly be needed in the future. In fact, the increase in wind power generation, for example, will increase the need for frequency stabilising reserves in the grid and the need for reserves is growing.
What is included in the contract?
The contract includes the installation and connection of the equipment to the electricity grid, financing, servicing and maintenance of the equipment with spare parts, ancillary service market trading and 24/7 monitoring of the equipment.
Who finances the contract?
The contract is financed by Cactos affiliated AIF fund supervised by the local financial supervisory authority.
Can the duration of the contract be influenced?
In principle, we offer a 10-year leasing contract, but this can be deviated from if the customer so wishes. However, the minimum duration of the contract is 5 years.
Can more units be installed during the contract period?
Yes, and this is often the case.
What happens after the contract period?
At the end of the contract period, you can choose to keep the unit and continue the maintenance contract with us.
What kind of product guarantee does Cactos have?
Cactos offers a full warranty on the equipment it manufactures for the entire leasing period. The warranty covers both labour and necessary spare parts.
How do I know how many units I need?
The amount of capacity to be installed depends on a number of factors such as the size of the electrical connection at the installation site, the characteristics of the potential PV system and other factors related to electricity consumption. Our experts will always design the optimal package together with the customer, taking into account the various factors that affect the sizing of the system.
How large an energy storage system can you supply?
Cactos can currently supply a system with a maximum storage capacity of 50 MWh.
How much capacity is there in one Cactos unit?
The capacity of Cactos units depends on the model.
The smallest Cactos unit, Cardo, has a battery capacity of 130 kWh and a power of 45 kW. Cactos Fero and its outdoor sibling Steno have a battery capacity of 240 kWh and a power of 92 kW.
Of our outdoor units, Cactos Yavia has a battery capacity of 430 kWh and a power of 184 kW, Mylo has a battery capacity of 520 kWh and a power of 260 kW, and Nevado has a battery capacity starting at 4,180 kWh and a power starting at 2,090 kVA.
Cactos units can be installed in parallel as needed, achieving greater storage capacity and power. For example, a system of ten Cactos Mylo units would result in a total battery capacity of 5.2 MWh and a power of 2.6 MW.

How does the Cactos system deliver savings?
The Cactos system delivers savings in many ways. Firstly, it optimises the purchase of electricity for the times when electricity is cheapest. Secondly, it can cut the peak power of the connection and reduce the potential power charge. If the site also has its own energy production, the Cactos system can store the energy produced for use when it is needed. At the same time, the amount of electricity purchased from the grid can be reduced.
Cactos can also deliver extra power when grid connection is limited. This is particularly valuable for sites that require more power than the grid can provide.
In addition, where power cuts cause disruption to production processes, for example, the batteries have significantly reduced the costs and disruption to production caused by power cuts.
In addition to the savings, the Cactos system can participate in reserve service markets, from which you as our customer receive a return. Grid-scale customers benefit from broader electricity market participation.
All this is driven by the Cactos Spine system, which optimises trading on the markets with local savings. The system seeks the best financial result for the customer, taking into account savings and returns.
What is your delivery time?
Cactos delivery time has typically been around three months at most. However, due to high demand, it is advisable to contact Cactos Sales to ensure up-to-date delivery times.
What is the smallest fuse size behind which a Cactos unit can be installed?
Our smallest model Cactos Cardo can be installed if the installation site has at least 3x63A fuses.
