Fast and reliable charging for electric trucks despite limited grid capacity

Wibax secures up to 400–450 kW charging power with Cactos energy storage.

At Wibax’s terminal in Malmö, 45 minutes isn’t a break: it’s a tight window. While the truck is being loaded and unloaded, it also needs to charge enough for its next route.

The challenge was a grid connection that couldn’t deliver sufficient power. Wibax solved the equation with an energy storage system from Cactos that charges in the background and delivers full power when the truck returns.

Wibax: Charging infrastructure of the future, built for everyday operations

Wibax is a responsible chemical supplier that manufactures, stores, and delivers chemicals, while also providing comprehensive logistics and service solutions to industries across Europe. As early as 2021, the Wibax Group decided to transition to an electric vehicle fleet. Within Wibax Energy, the focus is on building charging infrastructure for the Group’s electric trucks and supporting its own electricity production.

The challenge: 45 minutes to charge, but the grid was not enough

At Wibax’s logistics terminal in Malmö, time is critical. The truck must not only be loaded with chemicals but also charged before its next trip.

The goal was clear: charge the truck during a loading/unloading stop of approximately 45–60 minutes, up to three times per day, so it can drive to the customer and ideally return to the depot. To maintain the schedule, around 450 kW of charging power was required.

The problem? The grid connection was too small. And expanding it was more of a marathon than a sprint. It would've taken 2–3 years to get additional capacity.

Battery storage: a power bank for the depot

When delivery times for a larger grid connection are long, energy storage becomes a logical solution: a large battery that charges slowly and then delivers high power when the truck returns for charging.

In Malmö, Wibax installed two Cactos Yavia units with a total capacity of 860 kWh and 368 kW of power. Together, they enable a total charging power of approximately 400–450 kW without overloading the grid.

A key part of the setup is the turnaround time: while the truck is away for 3–4 hours, the battery has sufficient time to recharge before the next charging session.

Fast charging on schedule – without waiting for the grid

With the installation in Malmö, Wibax has been able to deploy its electric trucks as planned, without waiting for a grid upgrade. The project was delivered quickly and with full technical support, through close collaboration between the Cactos and Wibax teams.

“Cactos immediately impressed us with their strong expertise and high level of commitment. The collaboration has been smooth from the start.”

Beyond securing charging capacity, the system also creates additional value by participating in Svenska kraftnät’s ancillary service markets when capacity is not needed for vehicle charging.

Fast charging without grid upgrades
The energy storage system enables up to 400–450 kW of charging power despite a limited grid connection, allowing electric trucks to operate according to schedule.
Consumption peaks under control
The system charges in the background and delivers high power when needed, smoothing the load and reducing the risk of grid overload.
Revenue from ancillary service markets
When capacity is not required for charging, the energy storage system participates in Svenska kraftnät’s ancillary service markets, generating additional revenue.
