Participate in ancillary service markets

Join ancillary service markets automatically with a Cactos energy storage system. Support the national grid and unlock a new revenue stream.

Why join ancillary service markets?

Join via a virtual battery pool
Participating in ancillary service markets requires meeting certain requirements, often too challenging for a single battery. With Cactos, your system joins a virtual pool, enabling automatic participation.*
Support electrical grid stability
Ancillary service markets help local transmission system operators maintain balance between electricity consumption and production. Your participation helps stabilize the grid during imbalances.
Unlock a new revenue stream
Transmission system operators pay for reserve capacity. As a Cactos customer, you get your share.* Earnings depend on factors like your system size, market prices, and the hours your capacity is available.

How does Cactos work in ancillary service markets?

Our energy storage systems participate in ancillary service markets through a virtual battery pool managed by Cactos. We handle trading and reporting, while you enjoy the income. In 2023 and 2024, revenue from ancillary service market participation has at least covered our customers’ cost of leasing a Cactos system.

Participation in ancillary service markets doesn’t override local benefits. For example, if you need momentary extra power, Cactos automatically switches modes to deliver it and then returns to the ancillary service markets once the local demand is met.

The compensation is determined by the ancillary services market. The amount depends on factors such as your Cactos energy storage system's size, market prices, and the number of hours you offer reserve capacity.

What are ancillary service markets?

Electricity production must match consumption. Disruptions in this balance can cause equipment failures or blackouts. Ancillary service markets help transmission system operators maintain this balance. Our blog explains why these markets exist, how they work, and what their future might look like.
