Huld and Cactos join forces to develop cybersecurity in the energy sector

April 17, 2024

Technology and design consultancy Huld and smart battery energy storage system manufacturer Cactos are starting a collaboration to enhance cybersecurity. The goal is to meet the high cybersecurity requirements of the energy industry, which are critical for maintaining the reliability of this vital sector.

Cactos is known for its innovative and cost-effective energy storage solutions, which are part of society's critical infrastructure. Now, in collaboration with Huld, Cactos aims to strengthen its cybersecurity capabilities even further.

"Cybersecurity plays a central role in our product development. We wanted to partner with Huld’s experts, who have strong expertise in industrial cybersecurity development and essential security certifications," says Kim Dikert, Head of Software Development at Cactos.

Huld will help Cactos’ development team to build secure product development and ensure that products meet the strictest security standards. Additionally, the upcoming NIS2 Directive, effective in the EU in October 2024, will be taken into account during the development process.

"Cactos has an excellent team, and their products are unique in the industry. Huld’s cybersecurity team is one of Finland’s leading consultancies for industrial cybersecurity, working across several sectors, helping to develop compliance with standards such as IEC 62443. The collaboration with Cactos is exciting on many levels, and we believe it will lead to new insights and innovations on both sides," says Tarmo Kellomäki, Business Area Manager at Huld.

A next-generation disruptor in the energy sector

Cactos is a pioneer in the energy sector, offering unique battery storage solutions. The company’s energy storage systems are installed on customer sites, where they protect customers from electricity price fluctuations, ensure backup power availability, and optimize the use of local energy production.

"Our battery storage systems form a virtual power plant that helps stabilize Finland’s national grid. This network enables the growth of renewable energy production and smooths out the fluctuations between production and consumption," explains Dikert.

In December 2023, Cactos managed around 50 Cactos One battery storage systems across Finland. With the recent funding round, the company expects to increase the number of its storage units to approximately 1,000.
