Cactos Oy has delivered its first battery energy storage systems to Wibax’s terminal in Malmö.
Cactos Oy, a Finnish company that develops and operates intelligent battery energy storage systems, has taken its first step into the Swedish market by delivering a battery energy storage system to the electric truck charging hub at Wibax’s logistics center in Malmö.
Wibax, known for its electric chemical tank trucks, supplies industrial chemicals and aims to fully electrify its vehicle fleet by 2030.
Charging an electric truck demands significantly more power from the electrical grid compared to a passenger car. In Malmö, for instance, limited local grid capacity poses challenges for charging electric trucks within a reasonable time.
Cactos has delivered two battery energy storages to the charging point, enabling three rapid charging sessions per day - each taking 45 minutes. A fully charged electric truck can travel approximately 200 to 400 kilometers.
Sweden’s transportation sector has rapidly transitioned to electric vehicles, outpacing the development of the electrical grid. The grid is heavily loaded, and securing new grid connections is both expensive and time-consuming.
Battery energy storage can partially compensate for grid limitations. Cactos’ battery systems enhance charging infrastructure to the extent that Wibax can continue pursuing its target of full fleet electrification by 2030.
According to Magnus Wikman, CEO of Wibax Energy, collaboration with Cactos has been smooth from the beginning:
“The company impressed us with its expertise and strong motivation,” Wikman says.
Cactos CEO Oskari Jaakkola also celebrates the partnership with Wibax, describing it as an excellent entry into the Swedish market.
In addition to Wibax, Cactos is delivering battery storage to the Alviksgården farm in Luleå, and is actively negotiating new deals.
According to Jaakkola, the Swedish electricity market is similar to Finland’s, but consumption is higher and more concentrated in the south. This creates a more urgent need for balancing the grid, for example with battery energy storage.
“In the worst case, limited grid capacity can hinder economic growth and reduce economic activity,” says Jaakkola.
Finland’s grid infrastructure is currently in slightly better condition than that of its western neighbor. There has been investment into the grid and electricity consumption remains more moderate at least for now.
In early 2025, Finland’s transmission system operator Fingrid announced restrictions on connecting new industrial electricity loads to the main grid in southern Finland between 2025 and 2027, citing faster-than-expected growth in electricity consumption.
“Even in Finland, the market is constantly growing as electricity consumption and peak demand increase,” Jaakkola says.
While Sweden has more competition focused on energy storage, Jaakkola believes that Cactos stands out with its unique brand, affordable financing, and comprehensive service model.
Cactos Oy is a Finnish company that manufactures and operates intelligent battery energy storage systems. The company's solutions enable efficient use of renewable energy, ensure critical electricity supply locally, and support, among other things, the electrification of transport. In Finland, Cactos has delivered battery energy storage systems for example to electric vehicle charging stations, logistics centers, industrial manufacturers, and other real estate.
Cactos’ competitiveness is based on an end-to-end approach that covers the entire value chain from storing electricity to its utilization. The Cactos Spine cloud service developed by the company maximizes the benefits of battery energy storage systems for customers. In addition, Cactos is responsible for the financing, optimization, trading, and monitoring of the battery energy storage systems. The systems and their key components are manufactured in Kempele, Finland.
Wibax purchases, processes, and sells chemical products to Europe’s basic industries. Its operations mainly include wholesale, import, production, development, maintenance and upkeep, warehousing, and distribution of liquid chemical products. The company has a wide range of products and services, enabling it to offer turnkey solutions. Wibax has its main office and production facilities in Piteå. Other terminals and offices are strategically located across Sweden, Finland, Estonia, and Norway.
