Danish energy company OK and Finnish battery energy storage company Cactos are starting a partnership. Cactos will supply the battery systems that OK installs at its stations across Denmark. Finnish design and manufacturing was one of OK's key selection criteria. The first units were installed in October, with new units following every month. The ambition is 70 battery units across Denmark by the end of 2027.
OK announced on 8th of October that it is building a nationwide battery network at its own locations. In the first phase the company will install 70 battery systems with a combined output of approximately 16 megawatts and a capacity of just under 65 megawatt-hours. The first 20 systems will be in place before 2027. Cactos supplies all the battery systems OK procures.
The Danish power grid is under strain, and the queue for a new grid connection is long. OK has approximately 1,100 locations where a connection is already in place. The battery systems will be connected to existing connections, so they can be put to use without waiting in the connection queue.
At a charging station, a battery system does three key things:
"In Denmark, the growth of the charging network is not limited by the availability of chargers but by the availability of grid connections. When a battery is installed on a connection that already exists, new charging power reaches drivers without waiting for the grid to be reinforced," says Oskari Jaakkola, CEO of Cactos.

The fact that Cactos is Finnish weighed in OK's choice. Cactos is a vertically integrated company: hardware design, manufacturing in Kempele, software development and operations are all under one roof. This enables agile development of the system to OK's needs, without middlemen.
"We were looking for a battery partner, not just an equipment supplier. It was important to us that the battery systems are designed and manufactured in Europe and that all the expertise sits within one company. It is much easier to discuss development ideas directly with the people who built the system," says Mads Bolkjær Winther, Senior director and responsible for BESS products at OK.
Cactos has supplied battery systems to charging stations in Finland, and that experience is now in use in Denmark as well. A battery system makes the charging station part of the wider power system: the same unit serves the driver, the station and the grid.
"OK's choice shows that there is demand for battery storage developed and manufactured in Finland elsewhere in the Nordics too. In Denmark, the electrification of transport and a congested grid meet earlier than in many other countries, so what is learned there will be useful more widely," Jaakkola says.
Hear from OK: Mads Bolkjær Winther explains how batteries help OK’s charging stations and why they chose Cactos.
